Our Italian fig cookies are filled with figs, raisins, walnuts, almonds, citrus and warm spice, then wrapped in a tender cookie shell and baked in Brooklyn.
Cucidati are traditional Sicilian fig cookies with a fruit-and-nut filling wrapped inside a soft cookie dough. You may also see the name spelled Cuccidati, depending on the family or tradition.
They are especially well known as a Christmas cookie, but plenty of people grew up eating them whenever an Italian bakery tray appeared on the table. Around here, there is no reason to wait for December.
A good Cucidati should have plenty of filling. Ours combines figs and raisins with walnuts and almonds, along with orange, lemon and spice. The fruit brings the richness, while the nuts and citrus keep the cookie from becoming overly sweet.
Frank & Sal's Italian fig cookies are baked in Brooklyn and packed for shipping throughout the country. They're a natural fit for holiday tables and family gatherings, but they're just as good when all you have planned is a cup of coffee.
These don't need much ceremony. Put a few on a plate, make coffee and you're done.
